What Basic Training Do I Need and What Makes a TRAINED Leader

One Boy Scouts of America goal is that every adult volunteer leader completes Basic training and earns the TRAINED Scouter strip for their uniform.

This section allows the leader to determine what training is required to earn the TRAINED leader patch to wear under leadership emblem for which was earned.

New leader Essentials

New Leader Essentials is the 90 minute introductory session for all adult scout leaders. The participants are exposed to the history, mission, values, aims and methods of the Boy Scouts of America. Also, it explains the similarities and differences between the scouting programs. This is required for all adults.

Cubmaster /Asst. Cubmaster Leader Specific Training

Basic leadership information for cubmasters and assistant cubmasters which includes lessons on pack organization, uniforms, advancement, pack program planning, pack and den structure, recruiting leaders and more. Length is 2 hours and 40 minutes.

District Committee Training Workshop

Trains district committee member in district structure and the district operational plan. It includes breakout sessions for all positions including the key 3.

Pack Committee Leader Specific Training

This training discusses the role of each committee member in the pack organization, youth advancement and program planning. Features include program themes, the importance of planning for a successful pack, den program planning, elements of a good den meeting, recruiting adult and youth and more. Length is 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Scoutmaster /Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training

Basic leadership information for scoutmasters and assistant scoutmasters is presented in either three 2 ½ to 3 hour sessions or one day long session. The role of adult leaders in a boy-led unit using the patrol method is featured. Items covered include troop organization, troop meetings, the patrol leader’s council, the outdoor program, advancement, finances, membership and more.

Tiger Den Leader Specific Training

Basic leadership information for tiger den leaders that includes lessons on pack organization and tiger den structure, planning a tiger den program, uniforms, advancement and more. Length is 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Webelos Den Leader Specific Training

This is basic training for first and second year Webelos leaders. It includes lessons on Cub pack organization and Webelos den structure, the Webelos advancement program and program planning. Another key item is preparation of boys to transition into a Boy Scout troop. Length is 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Wolf/Bear Den Leader Specific Training

This is basic training for wolf and bear den leaders. It features the role and responsibilities of a den leader and how to motivate cub scouts. It includes lessons on Cub pack organization and den structure, the advancement program and the den and pack program planning process. Length is 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Venture Leader Basic Training

This is basic training for adult crew leaders. You learn how to organize and administer an exiting venture program for men and women aged 14-21. Five training sessions present the venture program, understanding and protecting youth, leadership, organization, awards, recognitions plus resources and program planning. Total training time is 5 hours and 5 minutes plus break time.
