Youth protection Youth protection defines the BSA’s determination to protect young people from physical, mental and emotional abuse. It explains the leader’s legal responsibilities to report suspected abuse and provides easy to implement policies to create a safe haven for the youth in pack, troop and venture programs. All Scouters are strongly encouraged to complete the course once every 2 years. BALOO – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation BALOO is a one day orientation for pack members who plan and implement outdoor experiences for a Cub Pack. Especially recommended for Webelos leaders. All pack leaders are encouraged. Den Chief Training This is a one day course for Boy Scouts who become Den Chiefs. Sessions include duties, responsibilities, and activities. It will help the adult leaders understand expectations and ensure success of the Den Chief. Recommended for den chiefs, den and Webelos leaders, Cubmasters, Scoutmasters and senior patrol leaders. Completion allows Den Chiefs to wear the TRAINED patch under their emblem of office. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills This two day weekend course provides leaders with the basic outdoor skills needed to start and conduct an outdoor program in a scout troop. The skills presented are those of a boy scout as he moves Scout rank to 1st Class Scout. The skills presented are found in the Boy Scout Handbook. Recommended for all Scout Troop leaders. Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must complete this course to earn the TRAINED patch to wear under their emblem of office. Also recommended for second year Webelos leaders and Venturing leaders. Junior Leader Training Conference (Birch-Bark) This week long council experience is called Birch-Bark in the W. D. Boyce Council. It is intended for mature boy leaders such as Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior patrol Leaders, Patrol Leaders and other junior troop leaders as recommended by their Scoutmaster. It features leadership skills and development. National Junior Leader Instructor Camp A week-long supplemental training camp offered at Philmont Scout Ranch to prepare Boy Scout junior leaders for positions of leadership in support of the Birch-Bark course. It is by invitation from Philmont following council recommendation from the Birch-Bark staff. Outdoor Skills Instruction This is a series of specialized course that may be offered by the council, districts or troops. Sessions include Backpacking, Camping, Cooking, Rock Climbing/Rappelling, Survival and Team Building. Contact your district training chairman for specific needs. Philmont Training Center The Philmont Training Center located near Cimarron, NM, offers several week-long supplemental training sessions each summer covering various subjects. Activities are also available for family members. Attendance is by invitation from Philmont following council recommendation. Contact your District Executive to discuss your interests and the programs available. Powder Horn Powder Horn is a six day advanced program that exposes leaders to outdoor activities, skills and the resources needed to provide Scouts and Ventures with exciting high adventure programs. Also provides familiarization to the Venturing Ranger program. Presented by region and a few selected councils. Recommended for all Venturing leaders and interested Boy Scout leaders. POW-WOW The pow-wow is an exciting day-long carnival of action, activities, and program ideas for all Cub Pack leaders. It is conducted as a council event. Roundtables Roundtables meet monthly except July for the purpose of presenting to adult leaders skills and ideas they can use to deliver an exciting program to the youth. Roundtables also renew enthusiasm and dedication to Scouting. Cub roundtables feature ceremonies, games and activities built around next month’s theme. Each month, the Scout roundtable features an important aspect of the scout program. Recommended for all pack and troop leaders plus any other interested Scouter. Trainer Development Conference -- BSA 500 A day long course. The purpose of the TDC/BSA 500 course is to develop the training skills of these who staff the various training courses. Successor to the old triple T course. Troop Junior Leader Training This is a one-day workshop conducted by Scoutmasters for the troop’s junior leaders. Troops may join together or districts may facilitate joint sessions to enhance the experience. After completion, the junior leader can wear the TRAINED patch under the emblem of office. Venture Huddles (No info available at this time) Webelos Leader Outdoor Training This training provides the outdoor skills for the leader to prepare a Webelos den for a camping experience. It includes the knowledge to plan, conduct and lead Webelos den overnight campouts. |
